In Nehemiah 8, the Israelites have recently returned from exile. One of the first things they want to do is hear the word of God read. So, all the people gather together and ask Ezra, a scribe, to read from the scrolls containing the book of theLaw of Moses, which we now know as the stories in the first five books of the Bible. As Ezra opens the scroll, the crowd stands. Then, they weep, whether from joy or sorrow we are not told. The Levites break the crowd into groups and interpret God's word to them so that all could understand. And, the Levites tell the people not to weep or mourn. Instead, they are all to go and eat the fat and drink the sweet wine and share what they have with those who have nothing. The Levites tell the people that upon hearing the word of God, they should go have a party and celebrate with great rejoicing, sharing with all people.
At Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, we strive, like the Israelites, to listen to the word of God and to interpret it together. Then, rejoicing in God's love and hope, we go out into the world to celebrate and to share with others all that we have been given.
We invite you to join us.
An Invitation-
Blacksburg Presbyterian Church is a community of faith, which seeks to live out the reality of God in Christ. We are a people who seek to grow spiritually and invite you to grow with us. We are a people who have our own questions, doubts, and insecurities and seek at least proximate answers, and we invite you to join with us in exploring your questions, doubts, and insecurities. We are a people who seek to express our faith in our community and our world as a reality that lifts up the human spirit and dignity. From partnerships in Blacksburg (from Virginia Tech, children, and those whose homes need repair) and Chicago and Malawi, we befriend those whom Christ called friends. From public policy to individual human need, we oppose anything that would seek to destroy or deform human life and work for those things which work toward wholeness of the individual and the human society.
All who seek faithful growth, fellowship, and service as Christ's followers are welcome here. Please browse our website and be sure to contact us if we can provide more information. May God bless you and bless our world.
