Malawi

 

The work of the Malawi Action Group is essentially a development project carried out in relationship with our partners and friends in Malawi. It includes involvement with the primary school community at Mulunguzi and the hospital and schools at Mulanje. We work with former graduate students from Virginia Tech who have been members of BPC, staff and community leaders whom we have gotten to know, and Presbyterian mission workers including Dr. Sue Makin. Our work is relational in nature and requires that members of BPC go to Malawi, hopefully each year, in order to deepen and strengthen our ties and our projects, and to learn and further understand the people and the culture of Malawi.

Dr. Sue Mankin is coming to BPC on March 7th. There will be a Moni, Malawi luncheon following the church service so watch for further details and mark your calendars.

PW, under the direction of Suzanne Sanford, has sent a packet of books to Mulunguzi School through William Susuwele. When they know they have arrived safely, they will send another mailing. So many books were donated and it is so expensive to send them, that some will be given to Head Start. The Margaret Beeks Library gave many wonderful new books and maps which were sent.

The 3 thru 5 grade Sunday School class with Janet Rakes and helpers have recently sent another $344.00 through Ndalapa Mhango to the Mulanje Mission Secondary School for student tuitions. This should support about 12 students for a year. Thanks to you all for your interest and donations.

The Sanga family from Malawi ñ Mopopo, Salome, and their son Romeo ñ are attending BPC. If you have not met them, please introduce yourself to them when you see them in the Gathering Space before or after the service.

Patti Talbot and Jennifer Jones of the Radford University College of Education faculty have joined our Malawi Committee. They are involved in Malawi academic programs at Radford, have both traveled to Malawi, and are wonderful, active additions to our group.
Scholarship Program

Ruth Botolo will soon be starting her 3rd and final year at Mulanje Mission Nursing School. We already have the money contributed to complete her nursing program. Thanks to all of you who have given so generously in her support. We will be announcing a continuing Scholarship Program at the Moni Malawi luncheon and through Minutes for Mission and the newsletter.
