Peace, Justice & Global Missions

The Peace, Justice, and Global Mission Committee of the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church aims to deepen the awareness and participation of the BPC congregation in peace, justice, and global mission.

Collectively we:

  1. Foster unity and harmony through dialogue, trusting in the transforming power of love and forgiveness;
  2. Actively identify, name, and wherever possible address situations of violence and injustice in all their forms, e.g., physical, institutional, emotional, economic, ecological, social;
  3. Provide support, resources, and opportunities for networking among groups involved in actions that strive to promote peace and justice;
  4. Act ecumenically when appropriate opportunities arise;
  5. Engage with programs of the PC(USA) and its agencies.

Acting as Christ's body, we seek to bring God's shalom into the world.

Our overarching goal is to build a missional church that seeks to engage the congregation in Peace, Justice, Global Mission/Outreach work through specific, results-driven objectives.

The objectives are chosen by the committee and the task of accomplishing the objectives is carried out by sub-committees called action groups. The present action groups within PJGM are:

  •     Central America
  •     The Environment
  •     Good News Partners
  •     Malawi
  •     Vulnerable Populations

 A sixth action group, PC(USA) Initiatives and Offerings, is responsible for coordinating the work of our action groups with initiatives of the national office PC(USA). In addition, this group plans and coordinates special initiatives and offerings recognized by the national church such as Peace Making Sunday, 2 cents-a-meal, Bread for the World, Covenant network, addressing the Tragedy of America's Gun Violence, and supporting the National Religious Coalition against Torture.
