Right Now...

The bible on the lectern was replaced recently.  It had gotten loose in the joints, the way we all do with age.  Marks, tears, wrinkles and signs of use are indications that it’s time for honorable retirement.  So the Worship Committee approved the purchase of a new lectern bible.  Such bibles are large and expensive.  Money for such a purpose was not in the budget, so we have turned to memorial funds to cover the expense.  There are no indications that the previous lectern bible was a memorial gift or given in honor of someone—but if you know something we in the church office don’t, please don’t hesitate to tell us.

Meanwhile the new bible deserves a moment of dedication.  The small type on our denominational calendars say this coming Sunday is Presbyterian Heritage Day, so the Worship Committee approved this Sunday for the dedication.  However we go about it, it’s important to remember that we don’t “believe in” the bible.  We believe in Jesus Christ.  That’s an important statement to keep in mind, especially when some people propound about “what the Bible says” in ways that are harmful or idolatrous.

This Sunday we will process the bible down the aisle at the start of worship and offer a prayer of dedication later in the service, remembering that we love the word of God (the bible) because of the Word of God (Jesus) revealed therein.

Peace, Catherine
